A Mint Color Dresser Makeover

Today my husband is a happy man!  There is one less piece of furniture in the garage than there was a week ago!  I tend to bring home furniture that I find for super cheap and then it ends up sitting in the garage for – well, a long time!  I am currently  banned from bringing home anything new until I do something with what is already in the garage!  So today, I want to show you how I transformed a very traditional-style dresser to a cottage-style beauty in a pretty mint color!

I didn’t take a before photo,  but this dresser was a traditional dark stain color.  To get the mint color I had in mind, I used a combination of Maison Blanche Mardi Gras and Oyster.  First, I gave the dark dresser  a base coat of the Oyster (which is a shade of white that I love)!  Then I added two solid coats of Mardi Gras (Mardi Gras is a light shade of green).

For the top of the dresser, I decided to blend the two colors to create a weathered effect.  After applying the second coat of Mardi Gras, I used a damp cloth to carefully remove and blend some of the green paint to reveal the Oyster base coat color.  I continued the process over the entire top of the dresser.  What you end up with is a nice blend of both colors.

I also used the Oyster to highlight the details on the dresser and to paint the original brass hardware.  This paint will stick to any surface – even metal!  After I painted the hardware in Oyster, I used a sanding block to distress it just a bit.

The beauty of Maison Blanche paint is the variation of color you can get from one can of paint depending on the finish you choose. For this dresser, I wanted to keep the color light and bright, so I chose to finish the piece with Maison Blanche matte varnish.  If I had wanted the color to be a deeper, more rich green; I would have used a dark wax.

Maison Blanche Paint is my FAVORITE! And yes I can relate to having a garage full of furniture...Especially since we just recently downsized to a condo and are trying to empty the storage unit that we have been renting between moves!

I have a question about the varnish...I have just recently started to use this since it is easier/faster to apply on larger projects than the wax, but am wondering what tool you use/like the best for applying the varnish? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

I just use a good quality brush that's made for varnish.

That is a beautiful piece and such a pretty finish, Doreen. I have a big sideboard in our garage and a few pieces in the basement that are waiting for me to give them a makeover. I just finished and shared a lovely round pedestal table for our living room so that's one off the list! I'm searching for some nice solid dressers but they are harder to find affordably around here. I'm not giving up though! I don't know why I wasn't following on Pinterest or Bloglovin' before, but I am now.
