homemade peach ice cream

The homemade ice cream recipe that I’m sharing today is one that I found several years ago in Southern Living magazine. It’s one that I always pull out when peaches are in season here in Pennsylvania!  And, the peaches are plentiful at the farmer’s market right now!

Making your own ice cream is not difficult and there are more modern countertop ice cream freezers, if you don’t want to mess with ice and rock salt.  Below, is the ice cream freezer that I use, a countertop Cuisinart ice cream maker, a freezer container to store your ice cream, and my favorite ice cream scoop!

Why You’ll Love This Ice Cream

  • This cool and refreshing summer time treat is full of fresh peach flavor
  • Making your own ice cream is healthier than getting it from the grocery store since you know exactly what goes in this homemade peach ice cream recipe
  • No preservatives needed
  • Fresh is always better than the stuff from the store
  • Kids LOVE helping to make ice cream
  • It’s easy to customize

Ingredients Needed

Get more info on all of these ingredients in the recipe card towards the bottom of the post.

  • ripe peaches
  • sugar
  • evaporated milk
  • vanilla instant pudding mix
  • sweetened condensed milk
  • half and half

How to Make Homemade Peach Ice Cream

  1. Combine peaches and sugar in a medium bowl. Let stand for one hour at room temperature. Process the peach mixture in a food processor until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides to incorporate it all together.
  2. Stir together the evaporated milk and pudding mix in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the peach puree, condensed milk, and half-and-half. Pour the mixture into the freezer container for a  4-quart hand-turned or electric ice cream freezer.
  3. Freeze according to the freezer manufacturer’s instructions. Spoon the ice cream mixture into an airtight container and freeze until firm. Or, if you can’t wait, scoop some in a bowl and eat it fresh from the freezer. It will be softer, but oh so delicious!!!

Storage

Leftover fresh homemade peach ice cream should be stored in a freezer-safe container and can be kept for up to a month.

Homemade ice cream made from fresh peaches doesn’t last as long as the store bought stuff since we are jamming preservatives and other things into it to help it last longer and stop it from crystalizing.

This is a great way to enjoy the yummy peach summer flavor a little later into the year.

Easy Peach Ice Cream Recipe

Tips and Variations

  • This is the best peach ice cream with the perfect amount of peach flavor and you can jazz it up however you prefer. Add some nuts for a nice crunchy texture added to your ice cream.
  • This recipe is perfect to make during peak peach season when peaches have the most flavor and are the most affordable. You can also use frozen peaches when they are not in season.
  • Have some fun and try making this with other fruit like strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries for a delicious twist on this fruit-based ice cream.
  • You can leave some bigger peach chunks if you like a little extra fun texture in your creamy peach ice cream.
  • You can trade out the granulated sugar for honey or maple syrup if you’re trying to lower your sugar intake and are okay with natural sugar sweetener options.
  • You can use an electric ice cream maker or the old-fashioned ice cream maker.

What if I don’t have half and half?

If you don’t have half and half, you can substitute it with a mixture of heavy whipping cream and whole milk. Start with equal parts of cream and whole milk, then increase the proportion of cream to make up for the richness that is usually provided by the half-and-half.

For example, you could use 1/3 cup heavy cream and 2/3 cup whole milk. This ratio should give an even richer flavor than the original recipe.

You can also try other substitutes such as evaporated milk or coconut milk if desired. Evaporated milk will give a thicker texture, but it may not yield quite as much flavor as other options. We already use some evaporated milk in this fresh peach ice cream recipe, so you may want to use something else to sweeten it up and make it a little richer.

Can I make ice cream sandwiches with this easy peach ice cream recipe?

Certainly! We like to make our own cookie ice cream sandwiches with homemade ice cream. Make your own favorite cookie and then slap some of this creamy homemade peach ice cream in between two of them and you’ll have a super summer treat!

If you’ve been afraid of no churn ice cream recipes, or making your own ice cream in an ice cream maker, this is a perfect one to start with. It’s quickly become one of our favorite recipes!

How are you, Doreen? When I made peach ice cream recently, the peaches froze pretty hard. I had been hoping it would taste like a Chick fil A peach milkshake, but it didn't bc the peaches were too frozen. Any ideas about that?

Thank you for the ice cream recipe. I can not tolerate eggs in ice cream. It's just the thought. This recipe doesn't include eggs!!! Yes! Look forward to churning some peach ice cream this weekend.
