Welcome to my summertime back porch! If you are a regular reader, you know that this space is one of my favorites to decorate seasonally. This summer my main inspiration was a macrame curtain that I saw on Pinterest. As soon as I saw it, I knew that I wanted to make my own version of macrame curtains for the screen porch and give the space a relaxed, summer, bohemian vibe. Never mind that I had never attempted macrame in my life, I was determined to have some macrame knots on at least the back two window frames of the porch!

I’m not gonna lie, the macrame panels took a few attempts – well, maybe five attempts! Making, tearing out, making again, tearing out again . . . but, that is how you learn! And, I finally was happy with what you see now! It’s really the most basic of knots and designs, but I didn’t have a pattern, and I learned how to make the knots from some videos on Youtube!
Once the macrame came together, the rest was easy! This spring I got a new rug for the porch that is a woven jute with a black border. And, then I found this small, white crocheted rug at Marshall’s and thought it would look great layered on top of the natural jute. My little table is an old cable spool topped with my Mary & Martha Ampersand Tray. Because I was so late in pulling this look together this summer, I got lucky and scored some great accessories on clearance at Target. The candle lanterns, faux air plants, wood bead and tassel garland, brass palm leaf, and large basket with the plant in the corner were all perfect for the look I was going for and the marked-down prices were incredible!
I love these new candle lanterns! The candles are battery operated and on a five hour timer. So, they come on at dusk and go off around midnight! They create a nice warm glow.
I love the combination of the green plants, the black and white in my pillows and decor, and natural wood and jute textures found on the back porch. The black and white pillows on my vintage glider are pillow covers from H&M Home. The fringe lumbar pillow is another Target find! I found the green glass jar candle at Marshall’s and it smells divine!
The vintage tables that I had on the porch got fresh coat of paint, and I chose to paint over the aqua with a charcoal color that is more neutral. This corner has more Target clearance finds – the wooden planter and the round basket on the floor. The black watering can is from Ikea. The natural poof under the table is also from Target. I got mine a few years ago and it’s held up great!
The natural pillows on the two vintage chairs are from TJ Maxx and the black and tan patterned pillows are – you guessed it – from Target. They were only $8 and change each!
The swing is my favorite spot and is cozy with a throw and some fluffy pillows. The black and white lumbar pillow and green pillow covers are all from Ikea. And, on the wall behind the swing you can see one last Target clearance find – the wool wall hanging! It had the perfect colors and was only $8.48 and I just couldn’t pass it up!
I was able to purchase a lot of things at a great price this year for the back porch, but my very favorite element is the macrame curtains that gave me so much grief! For me, it’s all in the feeling of accomplishment when my vision becomes reality! And, sometimes that takes patience and persistence on my part! Mark thought I was crazy as I untied row after row of knots and that I should forget about the macrame curtains! But, I’m so glad I stuck with it!

Wow! The macrame curtain is very beautiful and impressive! The whole porch is very cozy and inviting. We are thinking of having a screen porch added. I notice your floor looks like decking. Do you have something like screening underneath to prevent bugs from coming in through the spaces between the floor boards?
Hi, Kristy! Yes, we do have screening underneath and so glad we do!
Porch is beautiful but love your tray/coffee table.
OMGOODNESS how I LOVE IT all… but those curtains!!! They absolutely MKAE the room! I am definitely going to YouTube them so I too can have them! Thank you!
Love the rug, the macramé curtains, the porch swing… so inviting!!
Love your porch! You manage to create a whole new look each year. I always look forward to seeing what you will come up with. You are so creative!!
Love your rug (the large natural tan one), the macramé curtains (perfect!), and the porch swing (I have several hanging – on my front porch and various places around my yard). Thanks for sharing!
The curtains are my favorite! They are beautiful and so unique.
Oh SO Lovely!
So inviting!
Wow! What a cute look!!! Love the macramé and that adorable rug. It looks like a giant doily. Just lovely.
Very pretty Doreen! I’m liking Boho style more and more these days too. I like your choice of black and white and green. Classy and pretty.
What a wonderful place to read and relax! You really did a great job!!
I love it, Doreen! It is so inviting. Great job as usual!
Oh such a delightful surprise!!!! I’m amazed how you can think up such fun ideas for your areas in your home year after year!!! You are a bargain hunter and DIY 👸🏻 queen–especially for tackling macrame!!! I agree! The look is stunning. Love it all!!!
Beautiful!!
It all looks so great. I am so glad macrame is making a comeback. I remember my Mom creating pocketbooks and wall-hangings in the 1970’s. I wish now that I saved some. I think I will ask her to show me some knots, if she is able. She’s 84 now!
As always, a lovely home.
It all works so beautifully. It’s even more impressive when I know that it was done with clearance items. Your persistence to learn a new skill and create something that brings you joy is inspiring!
Love your porch….lots of inspiration! Love your blog 🙂
All of the textural elements are so artfully done! Love the punches of black and the tasseled beads are to die for.
What a beautiful porch reveal!! I really love it all! The pops of green and all the textures!!🙌 And those curtains- absolutely gorgeous!! They really do add so much!! Beautifully done!!💗😊
Excellent information, I really like macrame curtains. I have gone through some sites and found some patterns here https://www.inhabitzone.com/diy/diy-patterns-for-macrame-curtains.html.
I hope your instructions will help to me to create macrame curtains with different colors.
