Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

Have you ever gone Christmas caroling?  When I was young, our church always went caroling at Christmastime.   Christmas caroling seems to have gone out of fashion, but I wish we would return to this way of spreading Christmas cheer!  One of my memories from caroling was coming back to a warm house or church building and having a hot cup of hot chocolate!  Hot chocolate is always a treat to come home to on a cold day!  Today, I’m sharing my recipe for Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix and how I make the white chocolate candy cane spoons that go perfectly with it!

Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe Dry Mix

I have made dry hot chocolate mixes before, but what makes this one different (better) is that it uses white chocolate in the mix!   I like to keep this homemade hot chocolate mix in a glass container on my counter (or somewhere that is easily accessible) along with jars of white chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, cinnamon, and candy cane spoons.

This homemade hot chocolate mix is taken up a notch with white chocolate chips in the recipe! This mix makes a smooth and rich cup of hot chocolate! Never buy those packets again!

Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 C Nonfat Dry Milk Powder
  • 2 C Powdered Sugar
  • 1 1/2 C Cocoa Powder
  • 2 C White Chocolate Chips
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl mix all ingredients together except the chocolate chips.
  2. Place chocolate chips in food processor and pulse the chocolate until ground into fine pieces.
  3. Add the ground chocolate to the mix and combine.
  4. Store mix in airtight container for up to three months.

Add 1/3 c hot chocolate mix to mug and add 1 cup of hot milk of choice or hot water (the hot chocolate will be creamier with milk). Stir to thoroughly combine. Serve with white chocolate candy cane spoons or top with whipped cream or marshmallows.

To use this mix, add 1/3 cup hot chocolate mix in a mug and fill with hot milk of choice.  You can also use hot water, but the hot chocolate won’t be as rich or creamy.  Top with whipped cream or miniature marshmallows, if desired.   I found the pink peppermint marshmallows in the photos at Walmart and they are delicious!

White Chocolate Dipped Candy Cane Spoons

I also like to make these white chocolate and candy cane spoon stirrers.  The white chocolate and little bit of peppermint take the hot chocolate up a notch!

WHITE CHOCOLATE and CANDY CANE SPOONS

INGREDIENTS:
Plastic spoons
White chocolate chips
Crushed candy canes

I make these spoons in small batches when I know we are having people over.  I like to use the plasticware spoons that are either gold or silver.  Instead of buying candy canes and crushing them myself, I now like to buy the crushed peppermint pieces.  I picked mine up at Walmart.  These are so easy to make.  First, melt the white chocolate as directed on the package in your microwave.  Line a baking sheet with wax paper.  Dip each spoon in the melted chocolate.  Be sure to cover the top and bottom of the spoon.   Place the spoon face down, so the bottom of the spoon is up, on the wax paper.  This way the chocolate won’t settle at the bottom of the spoon. Dip all your spoons once and then refrigerate until well set.  Then re-dip each spoon and sprinkle with the crushed candy cane.  Again, place each spoon face down on the wax paper.  Refrigerate again for about 1/2 hour until completely set.

A jar of the hot chocolate mix with some of these white chocolate and candy cane spoons makes a great gift for neighbors, bus drivers, the mailman, etc.   I hope you’ll give this homemade hot chocolate a try!  And, don’t forget to visit the other Cozy Living posts for November below!  I know I always look forward to seeing their great ideas!

Omigoodness Doreen! This recipe is one I have to try. My family goes on a mini vacation for Christmas and I'm going to make this for all of them at the cabin we stay in. The spoons are a great idea. And I'm with you on the caroling thing - I wish it was still done today.
