Small Updates in the Living Room

February 11, 2020 by Hymns and Verses 8 Comments

You don’t have to do a complete makeover to update a space in your home!  Small updates can make such a difference and can immediately change the look of a space!

Today I want to show you a few small updates I’ve made in my living room that have just freshened up this space!   I didn’t change out the “bones” of this space – the wall color or the main furniture pieces.  I simply brought in some new accessories!  The accessories in your home can bring new life to what you have, just like new jewelry, shoes, or a handbag can update your wardrobe!

SMALL UPDATES – PLANTS

Greenery in the home is HOT, HOT, HOT right now!  And, I love it!  Bringing in a new plant breathes new life into a space!  Now, there are some that would say that the plant has to be real, but I’m not a plant purist!  I think a really good faux plant can do the trick, especially if you don’t have a lot of natural light to work with – because a real plant does need light!  I’ve found through trial and error over the years that a lot of live plants don’t do well in certain areas of my home.  My living room is one of those spaces!    So, I first purchased a faux fiddle leaf fig that has been in my living room for the past couple years!  You can see more about the faux fiddle leaf fig HERE.

But, I was ready for an update and purchased this new faux olive tree for the same corner, and I couldn’t be happier with it.    Here is a close up of the branches.

I also picked up some winter greens, white berries, and tulips at the grocery store to make this pretty winter arrangement on my vintage library table.  When it comes to florals, I do prefer real!  And, the fact that we no longer have to visit a florist to get unique florals makes it so easy to create an inexpensive, but beautiful arrangement.

Brass Accents

I think the warm tone of brass (not the shiny 80’s brass) can brighten up a space!  I’ve been adding more and more brass to my home in recent months.  The footed brass oblong bowl on my mantel is one of my favorite small accessories!  I purchased it in the fall and I’ve used it in my decor for the fall season HERE, in my Christmas dining room HERE, and now here on my mantel for winter with some sugar cones and faux greenery.

The other new brass accent in my living room is a new chandelier!  I sold my wrought iron chandelier to a friend and picked up THIS new one to replace it.  It has an updated shape that I love along with the warm brass tone.  Other brass accents in this room, but aren’t new are:  Round Brass Mirror, Brass Planter, Brass Swan Planter, and Large Hammered Brass Vase (all no longer available).

The final brass accent that is new is the pretty abstract floral painting on the mantel.  I saw this canvas art online and immediately knew it would work perfectly in the living room because of the colors!  Doesn’t it look great with the painted shiplap (Luxe by Magnolia).  And, the brass-look frame is pretty terrific too!

These small updates brightened up my winter living room!  The floral painting and fresh flowers give a nod to the warmer springtime weather that is coming!  And, the brass accents update the space and give such a pretty glow without spending a lot of money!   I hope you enjoyed seeing the changes in my living room!  And, speaking of changes, we are getting close to seeing the kitchen makeover completed!!

Your room is so elegant and calming. I have a home that plants don’t thrive in ☹ so faux is my friend by necessity. The olive tree is gorgeous..

    Doreen,
Breathtakingly beautiful updates to your lovely living room!
I am fortunate to have ample sunlight in our living room for live plants.
Oh, but did I mention that I have a ‘black thumb’?
I, too use faux greens throughout my designs.
Love the paint hue on your walls!
    Soothing and comforting!
    Thank you for always inspiring!
    Pat
