Repurposed Old Door Message Center

Today I want to show you how a repurposed old door became a family message center in our home!   It is a fairly easy DIY project with a great vintage vibe.  And, it’s so useful to keep the entire family organised and informed!

Repurposed Old Door Becomes a Family Message Center

This is the old door I picked up for $10 at a local salvage shop!  The door was in pretty bad shape (as you can see).  I removed any paint that was chipping and sanded it a bit.  Then, I gave it a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray paint in a flat finish.   For the chalkboard, I used a piece of thin plywood cut to size for the top panel.  Then, I painted it with several light coats of chalkboard spray paint and attached it with small finish nails to the back of the door.  Now, I can use the chalkboard to leave messages for the family, post a weekly menu, or do some chalkboard art!  I love the versatility that this permanent chalkboard will give me!

Now that we have 5 (yes, I said 5!!!) drivers in our house, we needed a place to manage all of those keychains and lanyards!  I had four rusty caster wheels on hand that we attached to each side of the door frame.  Mark drilled a hole about the same size and pounded them in with a mallet.  Now we have at least four places to hang up those keys, so they don’t get misplaced (because you know that never happens at my house!!!).
I found oversized coat hooks and added one on each side to hang larger items like a tote, handbag, hat or scarf.  They are also sturdy enough for a fall jacket or sweater.
I attached a wire basket and added a small tin chalkboard to the front so we have a place, other than the dining room table, for the daily mail!
The door didn’t have a handle, so I found this rusty one!  And, I think it is a perfect fit!
The trunk I found at TJ Maxx sits in front of the door and holds some extra pillows.  And, I made the lumbar pillow with our last name using a plain Pottery Barn pillow cover.

FINISHED Family Message Center

There’s a place for everything and everything in it’s place!
And, here you can see this Repurposed Old Door decorated for the seasons and as a prop for a bridal shower!

This is so cute!! I have so many doors around here. Many came from an old church that was being remodeled and I got them for free. I am always looking for new ideas. I love the use of the vintage castes. I have an odd number of them currently, that is great idea! Pinning and sharing on my FB page. Would love if you have time to stop by Redouxinteriors tomorrow afternoon to share at my party. Thanks!
