As promised, I’m back today to share how Mark made the space saver storage shelves for my office/craft room closet! First, I want to show you the inspiration for this inside the closet door storage. I first saw this closet door spice rack on Pinterest by Shanty 2 Chic and showed the plans to Mark! He altered the plans slightly by using 0.25″ x 1.5″ x 22″ trim wood from Lowe’s instead of drilling holes and inserting dowel rods to hold the spices on the shelves and he used his pneumatic brad nailer to attach these trim pieces to the sides of the frame boards.
So, to save space in my office closet, which holds my craft supplies, I knew something like this would be perfect for those closet doors. Specifically, I needed something like this to hold my many containers of craft paint! Yes, I have a LOT of craft paint! Mark built me two of these – one for each door. The other door holds more paint, glitters, hole punches, glues, glue guns, twine, and any other small supplies that would work well on the shelves! I’ve had those black chalkboard finish mugs for years! I got them at Michael’s on clearance and kept forgetting I had them because they weren’t in plain sight! Well, now they are, so you will be seeing me do something with these in the upcoming year!
You can see in the above two photos, that the trim pieces were placed to line up with the bottom of each shelf! Mark put them low like this to make it easier to take things in and out. And, the trim piece just tall enough that it holds everything in place when I close the doors. I’ve been using them now for over a month and, so far, nothing has fallen out!
I want to mention that Mark gave the bottom shelf about an inch more space to hold some taller items that I had. The rest of the shelves are all spaced equally. I created a graphic that you can print and take to Lowe’s to pick up all of the wood that you need for this project. For this project, Mark didn’t use a Kreg Jig like shown in the Shanty 2 Chic plans. We do have a Kreg Jig and love it, but for this little build, he just used his brad nailer and wood glue to attach the wood pieces together. It’s very solid and isn’t going to fall apart!
As always, please feel free to ask any questions! If I don’t have the answer, Mark will – ha, ha! And, he says this was a super easy project that he did in a day! I painted the shelves with the same paint as I used on my closet doors – which is an oil based paint that is hard as nails and won’t chip! I know people have gotten away from using oil-based paint, but I prefer it for trim and my interior doors and moldings.
I hope you liked seeing how we made this space saver storage shelves that fit perfectly inside an interior door! If you make some yourself, I’d love if you’d share a picture with me!

I love your closet. I am currently setting up a new space for all my craft items, mostly sewing and yarn work items. This is giving me some ideas for my hubby. He is my furniture maker and just “loooves” when I ask him to make me things. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice. What a nice husband you have. Hoping and praying you’ll feel better soon.
